Expert Preparatory Roundtable: Climate Altering Techniques
The use of climate altering techniques, and in particular some solar radiation modification approaches, raise enormous governance, including ethical and practical questions, including how to balance the risks of a continued warming planet against the largely unknown risks of intervening in our deeply interconnected planetary system. Most immediately, the realm of climate altering technologies demands a governance framework where policymakers can weigh decisions together and align their actions with other global priorities, including sustainable development, biodiversity protection, and human rights. To support HLAB’s ongoing discussions for improving global governance in key areas, this roundtable offered a deeper understanding of the implications of climate altering techniques, and a range of potential recommendations for developing a governance framework for them.
